In 2019, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) launched a pedestrian-safety campaign designed to encourage safer behaviour among both drivers and pedestrians. The campaign focused on three simple but important actions: making eye contact, yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks, and using designated crossing areas. Instead of relying only on conventional advertisements, SAAQ created a campaign that made road safety impossible to ignore.

The campaign’s most memorable execution was an innovative outdoor stunt that transformed a pedestrian crossing into a physical barrier. When a vehicle approached while a pedestrian was crossing, sections of the crosswalk rose from the ground, creating a fence in front of the car. The unexpected installation immediately forced drivers to stop and experience, in a very literal way, what it means to give pedestrians the right of way.

The creative idea worked because it converted an abstract safety instruction into a physical experience. Drivers are accustomed to seeing painted road markings and safety signs, which can easily become part of the background. By turning the crosswalk into an actual obstacle, SAAQ changed the meaning of the familiar road environment. The message was no longer simply “stop for pedestrians”; the environment itself demonstrated why stopping matters.

The stunt also gave the campaign strong experiential and earned-media potential. People could see the installation, react to it and share the unusual experience online, extending the campaign beyond its physical location. SAAQ supported the broader initiative through television, radio, digital and social-media advertising, allowing the central pedestrian-safety message to reach audiences across multiple platforms.

Ultimately, SAAQ demonstrated how public-service advertising can become more effective when it moves beyond simply telling people what to do. By transforming an ordinary crosswalk into an unexpected physical barrier, the campaign made pedestrian safety tangible, memorable and shareable. Its biggest marketing lesson is simple: when people can experience a message instead of merely seeing it, the message becomes much harder to ignore.
