In India’s social media economy, influencer marketing is often judged by the wrong question: “How many sales did this creator generate?” Sales can certainly be tracked through affiliate links, discount codes, UTM links and platform attribution. But when the objective is awareness, consideration or brand familiarity, immediate conversion is not necessarily the right measure. Influencers can put a brand into the daily content consumers already watch, making the brand feel familiar before the consumer actively enters a buying journey. This is particularly relevant in India, where YouTube says more than 10,000 creators have participated in its Creator Collective community across 17 cities, reflecting the scale and diversity of the country’s creator ecosystem.
Mamaearth is one of India’s clearest examples. In its early growth, the brand used a broad network of parenting, beauty and lifestyle creators rather than depending entirely on expensive mass-media advertising. The strategy made its products appear repeatedly in the routines, reviews and recommendations of creators whose audiences were already interested in personal care. A more recent Mamaearth campaign on Amazon MX Player demonstrates why awareness deserves its own measurement framework: the campaign generated 82+ million impressions, and a Kantar Brand Lift Study reported a 5% increase in awareness, 15% increase in brand favourability and 12% increase in purchase intent. Amazon also reported a 77% increase in brand recall and a 100% increase in share of searches on Amazon.in. The important lesson is that the creator/content ecosystem did not have to produce an immediate checkout from every viewer to create commercial value.
Nykaa follows a similar logic in beauty. Beauty products are inherently demonstrative: consumers want to see how a foundation looks, how a skincare product fits into a routine or how a particular makeup technique works. Nykaa has therefore worked with beauty influencers and creators to turn products into tutorials, reviews and everyday-use content. A recent campaign involving 300 nano- and micro-influencers focused specifically on product education and awareness for Nykaa’s skincare range. The strategic advantage is obvious: instead of simply telling consumers that a product exists, creators demonstrate where it fits into their lives.
There is also evidence that creator partnerships can outperform conventional branded creative on awareness objectives. Google reported that MAC Cosmetics, while targeting brand awareness and consideration in India, partnered with Indian beauty creators Ankita Chaturvedi and Naina Bhan for YouTube Shorts partnership ads. The creator-led campaign achieved a 2.5× better view-through rate and 66% lower cost per view compared with the brand’s campaign using branded creatives alone. This is significant because it demonstrates the advantage of creators beyond simply borrowing their follower count: the content itself can be more native to the environment in which consumers encounter it.
That does not mean influencer marketing should escape performance measurement. It means the measurement should match the objective. A conversion campaign should be evaluated through attributed sales, CPA, ROAS and incremental purchases. An awareness campaign should examine reach among the target audience, video completion, brand recall, familiarity, consideration, branded search and brand lift. Even within the same campaign, these metrics can work together: awareness creates familiarity, familiarity reduces uncertainty, consideration builds intent, and another touchpoint may eventually capture the sale.
Therefore, the strongest influencer strategy is not necessarily the one that produces the most discount-code purchases. It may be the one that makes a relatively unfamiliar product appear repeatedly in credible, culturally relevant and highly targeted conversations. Influencer marketing is not a replacement for performance marketing; it is a powerful complement to it. When the objective is to make people know, remember and consider a brand, creators can deliver something a conversion dashboard alone cannot fully capture: mental availability.
