For years, 😂 dominated digital conversations as the universal shorthand for laughter. But 2025 marked a surprising shift: 😭, the Loudly Crying Face, became the world’s most-used emoji, according to analysis discussed by The New York Times. The analysis drew on Google data and Reddit discussions to understand how different generations use emojis. Reported figures suggest 😭 accounted for more than 6% of global emoji usage, pushing traditionally dominant laughing emojis further down the ranking. What looks like a tiny change in keyboard behaviour actually reflects a much bigger transformation in how people communicate online.

The biggest reason behind 😭’s popularity is its meaning beyond literal crying. Among younger internet users, particularly Gen Z, 😭 can mean “that’s hilarious,” “I cannot deal with this,” “this is painfully relatable,” or “I’m overwhelmed.” Its meaning depends heavily on context. Someone might comment “I’m crying” under a ridiculous meme without feeling remotely sad. The emoji has effectively become a tool for exaggeration and emotional intensity. Instead of simply representing sadness, 😭 now communicates a whole spectrum of reactions, making it far more versatile in fast-moving digital conversations.

The decline of 😂 is equally revealing. The laughing emoji remains widely used, but among younger users it can sometimes feel associated with older internet culture. That doesn’t mean Gen Z has collectively “banned” 😂; rather, digital communities constantly develop new signals of belonging. Once an expression becomes too mainstream, younger users often gravitate toward alternatives that feel more culturally current. This has happened repeatedly with internet slang, memes and abbreviations. In that sense, emoji preferences can become generational markers, revealing not just what people are saying but which corner of internet culture they belong to.

For marketers, this shift is more important than it initially appears. Emoji usage is part of cultural language, and brands trying to communicate with Gen Z need to understand the meaning behind these symbols rather than simply copying whatever appears to be trending. Using 😭 because “Gen Z likes it” can easily feel forced if the surrounding copy doesn’t understand the culture. The smarter approach is to understand why the audience uses it, when it feels natural and what emotion it communicates in a particular context. Cultural fluency matters more than simply inserting internet slang into a caption.

Ultimately, the rise of 😭 isn’t really a story about one emoji replacing another. It is a story about language constantly evolving online. A symbol created to represent intense sadness has been repurposed into a shorthand for humour, disbelief, embarrassment and chaos. That’s what makes internet culture so fascinating: meanings aren’t permanently assigned to words, symbols or emojis. Communities continuously reshape them. The most popular emoji of 2025 therefore tells us something bigger than what people are typing, it shows how quickly Gen Z and online communities can rewrite the rules of everyday communication.
